So sad - such a great comic. I loved Mork and Mindy, good Morning Vietnam, Mrs Doubtfire, Dead Poets Society, the genie in Aladdin (I just bought the DVD for my son last week - he loved it) almost everything he did. He had severe depression (and substance abuse problems) for a long time so not a total shock - when I heard he had died my first thought was suicide. Both he and Rick Mayall in the same year - two revolutionary comics pass way too young - both of them gave me so much laughter in my teens and 20s.

Hubby's tempted to go back
by jgnat intoday he kept bumping in to (or rather dodging and weaving from) fellow witnesses.
he's talking about returning but can't figure out a way to do it without enduring a fair amount of humiliation.
i did not panic.

Captain Obvious - I found your comments helpful. I am in exactly the position that my wife has stoppe dgoing to meetings but has not talked about it and so I fear she is vulnerable to being pulled back in so I am trying to think of strategies to get her to open up but it is hard. I am thinking of saying to her: "It is good for us (my son and I) that you have stopped going to meetings but I don't want you to feel guilty about it so it would be good it you could let me know if you feel bad about not going so we can talk about it." Do you guys think this will work? Cheers Fraz

jgnat - sorry to hear this but your level-headed response should hopefully mean it will be a temporary phenomenom. My suggestion as to his excuse for going back: "I thought I would be happy not feeling bad about myself all the time but I realised I missed the feeling that I wasn't good enough and so my inner masocist is forcing me to return!" Some S&M gear would be the appropriate dress to express this sentiment. Fraz

Wars of Religion - THE TIMES - What a JW will think
by Da.Furious inlink to the newspaper front page on bbc:.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/blogs-the-papers-28699852.
reason i started this topic is related on how the wts/jw's will react or jump onto this piece of news.. in previous years where un or some nation condemned the vatican, jw's start jumping into conclusion the end is near the great tribulation is starting.

Yes the WBTS will jump on this in the way they always focus on the negative and grab at straws to claim the end is nigh BUT governments will not ban religion ever. It would be political suicide and is contrary to the long-held principle of reedom of religion.

Will someone, please, stop ISIS?
by skeeter1 inwill anyone stop isis?by josh levs, cnnupdated 2:07 pm edt, thu august 7, 2014(cnn) -- if you're following the news about isis, which now calls itself the islamic state, you might think you've mistakenly clicked on a historical story about barbarians from millennia ago.. in a matter of months, the group seized territory in both iraq and syria and declared an islamic caliphate, celebrating its own shocking slaughter along the way.. "i don't see any attention from the rest of the world," a member of the yazidi minority in iraq told the new yorker.
"in one day, they killed more than two thousand yazidi in sinjar, and the whole world says, 'save gaza, save gaza.'".
in syria, the group hoisted some of its victims severed heads on poles.

Rushing to military action to invade Iraq and get rid of Saddam is what created the preconditions for groups like ISIS to take advantage of the security vacuum now existing in Iraq. Arming the Kurds is not the simple solution it appers to be either - the Kurds are just as likley to start using them to fight each other or Turkey. Obama is right to weigh his options - I see he has authorised air strikes. I see the UK is not joining in.

Freaking out a Jehovah's Witness
by jgnat inas you know, my husband has physically left the witnesses.
he nevertheless clings to many of the beliefs like a protective cloak, and every once in a while i trigger a dissonant episode where my reality clashes with his.
recently he listened in on my work research, a video of a futurist describing the a potential "disruptive change" event in the next fifteen years, as our culture shifts to autonomic (driverless) vehicles.

How to (or not) handle the occasional JW who wanders in here
by Check_Your_Premises ini originally thought of posting this thread last week when a thread was started last week: .

this girl didn't seem to realize the extent of the "apostasy" on this thread.

Is their a new holocaust in the making ? Are jews being made the scapegoats again ?
by smiddy inmass immigration in the world "seems" to have led to a rise in anti -semitism in the west.
france now has more than six million muslims.. germany now has four million muslims.
the netherlands has almost one million muslims .

smiddy - I am sorry to say that I totally disagree with you and would suggest that you are too influenced by a very effective campaign to justify the completely disproprotionate use of force by Israel. I would strongly encourage you to study the history of Zionism and the creation of the State of Israel starting with the Balfour declaration and carrying on through the use of terrorism by Zionist groups such as Irgun and the Stern Gang agaisnt the Brits to get them to abandon Palestine, which at the time was a British protectorate and prior to the Balfour declaration was more than 90 percent Palestinian Arab, in a way that created the preconditions for the creation of the State of Israel. They made their bed and now they have to lay in it but they want to play the victim. They are far from victims. But you need to distingusih Isrtael and Zinoims from the Jewish people generally who historically were victims of terrible racism. The irony is that it is now the Arabs and the Muslims who are the biggest targets of racist hatred as demonstrated by some of the posts on this and other threads. I must say I am horrified by the level of knowledge of the issues demonstrated by posters on JWN on this and other threads and there seems to be a correlation between the level of lack of understanding and the vehemence of the opinion. Hamas gets support from the youth of Gaza because of the sense of futility they have inherited. I have been to Gaza - it is miserable - young people htere have no propsects of any future whatsoever. JB - WTF - ditch the conspiracy theories! While there are rich and influential Jews (and it is no accident that the US and UK governments are loath to cirticise Israel), there are are rich influential people from most ethnicities and religions. You also need to recognise that the Jewish people have been oppressed terribly over the years and the sort of crap that you sprout was often used as the rationalisation. I am a big opponent of Zionism and Israel's policies in Palestine, in particular the disproportionate attacks on Gaza but I cannot countenance inciting racial hatred either. Also your patronising 'I am right and the rest of you who do not accept what I am saying are idiots' tone is offensive. Fraz
